Two narrow jobs, and no others:

• it reads the figure a measuring tape shows in a photograph you uploaded;
• it transcribes the rows of a size chart you screenshot, and works out whether the figures are centimetres or inches.

The model does not do the conversion. The arithmetic runs in your browser, on figures you can see, which is why every reading can be printed as plain text with both numbers and the difference between them on it. If a transcribed figure looks wrong against the chart in front of you, the chart is right and we are wrong.

This service converts between measured sock lengths. It neither collects nor requires calf circumference, leg length, height, shoe size or any other body measurement. There is no field for one, and no column for one in our database.

The reference point is a pair of socks you already own and already like. That is a privacy protection, and it is also the more accurate method: a sock you have worn has already taken your leg into account in a way no figure you could type would.

We do not accept photographs of legs, of feet, or of anyone wearing anything, and no such upload facility exists.

No-show, ankle, quarter and crew are defined by each maker separately, and the same word can differ by several centimetres between them. There is no specification anywhere that fixes what any of them means.

This is the state of the industry rather than any brand’s fault, and this service makes no such allegation. We do not claim any maker has described its goods wrongly, and we do not rate, rank, review or recommend any of them. Brand names picked out of a chart you upload are masked before they reach the screen, a shared card or a link preview.

When a maker publishes a name and no measurement, this service will not produce a specific figure for that pair. Not an approximate one, not one with a wide margin. The interface renders a visibly different state — a hatched field with no number in it — so that it cannot be mistaken for an estimate.

What you get instead is the range that word has been observed to span across the market, and the advice to ask the maker for the actual measurement. One line in a message usually gets it.

Inventing a figure that looks definite is more likely to cause a wrong purchase than saying that it is unknown. That is the whole reason the fog state exists, and it is never watermarked over, never collapsed and never abbreviated on any tier.

Sock elasticity, the shape and circumference of your calf, and how far the sock draws back after wear and washing all change where it actually sits, and all of them are unknown to this service. So is where the maker started measuring — some measure from the heel seam, some from the sole.

Every estimate is therefore given as a range, never as a point. The list of what we cannot know appears on every reading and is never hidden behind a paywall or covered by a watermark.

The scale illustration is an abstract line and a set of graduations rather than a depiction of a body. Nothing this service outputs contains a leg, a foot, a figure or any rendering of a person.

This service evaluates no brand, recommends no purchase and offers no price comparison. It carries no affiliate or referral arrangement of any kind.

A length differing from expectation does not ordinarily constitute a defect, and the output of this service is not evidence for a return, a complaint or a claim. The terms forbid presenting it as such. That restriction is on the use of our output and does not touch your rights against whoever sold you the goods.

The service must not be used for any medical, legal, financial, safety, employment, credit, housing or judicial purpose. It is a length converter for people buying socks.

Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights.

Content you upload is not used to train models, ours or anyone else’s. That is a term of our contract with the model provider, not a policy we could quietly change. Uploads are held only as long as needed to produce your reading and deleted within 30 days, or immediately when you delete them yourself. The detail is in the privacy notice.
